Integrity is a manifestation of the character of professionalism. Integrity refers to the quality that underlies public trust and becomes the benchmark for a person to test all decisions he will make (Retnowati et al, 2019). According to Tarigan (2011) in Retnowati et al (2019) integrity has principles that require every practitioner to behave firmly, honestly, and fairly in establishing professional and business relationships. Integrity in the workplace is an important foundation for a healthy and productive corporate culture. Amidst organizational dynamics, leadership plays an important role in promoting and enhancing integrity among team members. In this article, we will discuss the important role of leadership in creating a work environment of integrity. Below are some of the important roles of leadership in the workplace:
1. Leading by Example
Effective leadership starts with setting a good example. Leaders who demonstrate a high level of integrity in their actions and decisions will serve as role models for the rest of the organization. By practicing ethical and moral values in every interaction and decision, leaders help shape a culture where integrity is valued and upheld.
2. Building Openness and Transparency
Openness is key to creating an environment where integrity can thrive. Leaders who are transparent in communicating, both about successes and challenges, will strengthen trust within the organization. By providing fair and open access to information and decision-making processes, leaders open pathways for honest and constructive discussions.
3. Promoting Accountability
Effective leaders not only take responsibility for their own decisions, but also promote accountability among their team members. By setting clear standards and ensuring that everyone in the organization understands the consequences of their actions, leaders create a culture where integrity is a top priority.
4. Provides Support and Coaching
Effective leaders also serve as mentors and coaches for their team members. By providing ongoing support and constructive feedback, leaders help team members to develop a better understanding of the importance of integrity in their work. Through good coaching, leaders can help team members overcome moral and ethical challenges they may face.
5. Enforce Policies and Procedures with Integrity
Last, but not least, leaders are responsible for enforcing integrity policies and procedures in the workplace. By setting high standards and taking decisive action against violations, leaders prove their commitment to the organization’s integrity values.
Overall, the role of leadership in promoting integrity in the workplace is critical. Through good examples, openness, accountability, support, and consistent policy enforcement, leaders can shape a culture where integrity is valued and upheld by all team members.
